Things you can do in your garden in March
Here is a quick list of things you can do in your garden in March.
Flowers & Boarders
- Tidy up borders, removing established weeds. Mulch well with garden compost. Clean or replace border edging if required.
- Feed ericaceous shrubs, such as rhododendrons with an ericaceous fertiliser.
- Clean out any debris from any water butts (also check the gutting).
- Pick off any seed-heads on any spring bulbs. Remember to leave the foliage to die back naturally.
- Tidy your alpines as they start to flower. but removing any dead leaves/foliage.
- Now a great time to plant shrubs and roses.
Fruit and veg
- Sow tomato seeds in trays or modules.
- Plant strawberries in hanging baskets. Hanging baskets are ideal for keeping plants away from slugs and snails.
- Plant onions and shallots keeping them 10-15cm apart to give them enough room to grow.
- Plant early potatoes in your veg plot, or in raised beds if space is limited.
- Feed any blackcurrant bushes a high-nitrogen feed.
- Feed gooseberries bushes using a high potassium general fertiliser.
