Growing Courgettes
Courgettes thrive in warm weather are versatile and easy-to-grow summer. When it comes to planting courgettes, you have the option of planting seeds directly into the ground or in containers.
- Planting Seeds Directly into the Ground:
- Preparation: Before planting directly into the ground, it’s essential to prepare the soil properly. Courgettes prefer well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Work in compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil.
- Sowing: You should wait until after the last frost date before sowing courgette seeds directly into the ground. Sow your seeds about an inch deep and as they spread out as they grow – space them around 2-3 feet apart. This will give them plenty of room as they grow.
- Maintenance: After planting make sure you give the plenty of water. Mulching around the plants can help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Planting Seeds in Containers:
- Container Selection: Choose a large container with good drainage holes. Half barrels, large pots, or grow bags work well for growing courgettes. Ensure the container is placed in a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight daily.
- Preparation: Use a well-draining potting mix enriched with compost or organic matter. Fill the container to within a few inches of the top.
- Seed Sowing: Sow the courgette seeds about an inch deep in the potting mix. Depending on the size of the container, you may plant one or two seeds per container.
- Maintenance: Water them regularly to keep the soil evenly moist. Container-grown plants may need more frequent watering than those in the ground since containers can dry out more quickly. Additionally, feeding with a balanced fertiliser can help ensure vigorous growth.
Regardless of whether you choose to plant courgettes directly into the ground or in containers, regular monitoring for pests and diseases is essential.
