Easy gardening jobs for January

To help you get a head start on your garden this New Year, we’ve put together a list of gardening jobs for January.

Garden Planning

Review and update your garden plan for the upcoming year. Review and plan any new additions. Order seeds and plan your planting schedule.

Soil preparation

Test your soil and amend it as needed. Suppress order weeds by mulching garden beds to protect soil structure.

Tool maintenance

Clean, sharpen, and oil your gardening tools. Inspect and repair any damaged tools.

Winter vegetables

Continue to harvest winter vegetables like kale, brussels sprouts and carrots.

Bird feeders

Bird feeders

Provide food and water for birds during the winter months. Keep your bird feeders topped up with nuts and make your own fat balls using Lard/suet, nuts, cereals, and sunflower seeds. Keep an eye on your bird baths and melt the an ice with warm water rather then simple braking the ice.

Garden clean up continue to remove dead plants and material from your garden.

Hardscape maintenance Check and repair and hardscape elements such as fences, trellis, patios and other garden structures.

Take hardwood cuttings Now is the time to take hardwood cuttings from gooseberry, black and red current plants.

Sow winter salads These are ideal plants for greenhouses, conservatories and windowsills.

Consider installing a bird box before the nesting season begins. Choose a well sheltered spot either on a tree trunk, shed or wall. Any time of year is fine, but autumn or early winter is best as many species of bird will start looking for a nest site as early as January.
