October Gardening Jobs
As the bright summer days transform into the rich and earthy tones of autumn, there is a unique charm that blankets the garden in October. The crisp air signals the changing seasons, and the leaves begin their graceful descent from the trees, creating a carpet of red and gold.
Despite the changing season, there are still plenty jobs the need to be done this October.
- Clean up Remove fallen leaves and debris from lawns, flower beds, and pathways and cut back spent perennials and remove dead or diseased plant material.
- Compost Add leaves and debris to your compost pile. Fork and turn your pile over regularly to help it decompose.
- Plant Spring Bulbs October is the perfect time to plan you garden for next spring by planting spring flowering bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths.
- Divide Perennials Separate and relocate densely grown perennials to enhance their overall well-being.
- Plant Trees and Shrubs The cooler October weather creates an ideal opportunity for the planting of fresh trees and shrubs. Make sure you water them immediately after planting.
- Lawn Care Continue mowing your lawn, but gradually raise the mower blade to a slightly higher setting.
- Prune Prune deciduous trees and shrubs after they’ve dropped their leaves. Try not to prune them too late in the month, this will avoid stimulating new growth that may not have time to harden off before winter.
- Protect Tender Plants Bring in or protect any tender plants or containers from frost. Cover them with frost blankets or move them to a sheltered location.
- Harvest and Store Harvest remaining vegetables, herbs, and fruits.
- Clean and Store Garden Equipment Be ready for the new growing season by cleaning and sharpening your garden tools for winter storage.
- Wildlife Support Remember to look after your local wildlife. Set up bird feeders and bird baths to provide food and water for birds during the colder months. Read more about helping mother nature this autumn
- Pest and Disease Control: Inspect plants for signs of pests and diseases. Treat as needed.
