Things you can do in your garden in March

Here is a quick list of things you can do in your garden in March.

Flowers & Boarders

  • Tidy up borders, removing established weeds. Mulch well with garden compost. Clean or replace border edging if required.
  • Feed ericaceous shrubs, such as rhododendrons with an ericaceous fertiliser.
  • Clean out any debris from any water butts (also check the gutting).
  • Pick off any seed-heads on any spring bulbs. Remember to leave the foliage to die back naturally.
  • Tidy your alpines as they start to flower. but removing any dead leaves/foliage.
  • Now a great time to plant shrubs and roses.

Fruit and veg

  • Sow tomato seeds in trays or modules.
  • Plant strawberries in hanging baskets. Hanging baskets are ideal for keeping plants away from slugs and snails.
  • Plant onions and shallots keeping them 10-15cm apart to give them enough room to grow.
  • Plant early potatoes in your veg plot, or in raised beds if space is limited.
  • Feed any blackcurrant bushes a high-nitrogen feed.
  • Feed gooseberries bushes using a high potassium general fertiliser.
