Things you can do in your garden in March

Here is a quick list of things you can do in your garden in March.

Flowers & Boarders

Tidy up borders, removing established weeds. Mulch well with garden compost. Clean or replace border edging if required.
Feed ericaceous shrubs, such as rhododendrons with an ericaceous fertiliser.
Clean out any debris from any water butts (also check the gutting).
Pick off any seed-heads on any spring bulbs. Remember to leave the foliage to die back naturally.
Tidy your alpines as they start to flower. but removing any dead leaves/foliage.
Now a great time to plant shrubs and roses.

Fruit and veg

Sow tomato seeds in trays or modules.
Plant strawberries in hanging baskets. Hanging baskets are ideal for keeping plants away from slugs and snails.
Plant onions and shallots keeping them 10-15cm apart to give them enough room to grow.
Plant early potatoes in your veg plot, or in raised beds if space is limited.
Feed any blackcurrant bushes a high-nitrogen feed.
Feed gooseberries bushes using a high potassium general fertiliser.
